The task was plain - to go through the night oakery to a hundred-year-old oak tree and to leave the grove out to the city.

Red light is useful for covert movement, because such light is less noticeable to potential foreign observers: security guards, casual passers-by and also to preserve the "night vision", it does not overexpose the retina during night operations, does not "kill" the vision, it takes less time for adaption in the darkness while red illumination.
The facts are well-known by old-fashion photographers.
